I. The gift of a spiritual workout

* CrossFit spiritual workouts begin by grace at the cross!

  1. So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence (Philippians 2:12).
  2. For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus (Philippians 1:6).
  3. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me did not prove vain; but I labored even more than all of them, yet not I, but the grace of God with me (1 Corinthians 15:10).

II. The goal of a spiritual workout

* CrossFit spiritual workouts strive towards spiritual maturity!

  1. So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling (Philippians 2:12; see Isaiah 66:2).
  2. But are you willing to recognize, you foolish fellow, that faith without works is useless? Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up Isaac his son on the altar? You see that faith was working with his works, and as a result of the works, faith was perfected (James 2:20-22).

III. The God of a spiritual workout

* CrossFit spiritual workouts are empowered by God, for God!

  1. For it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure (Philippians 2:13).
  2. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them (Ephesians 2:10).
  3. We proclaim Him, admonishing every man and teaching every man with all wisdom, so that we may present every man complete in Christ. For this purpose also I labor, striving according to His power, which mightily works within me (Colossians 1:28, 29)

Life Group Flow and Discussion Questions

CrossFit Spiritual Workout

An important Guideline of Life Groups: There is no spiritual workout possible until you humbly trust in Christ dying on the cross for your sins as your gracious gift of salvation (Galatians 2:20; 5:24; 6:14). Make sure everyone in your Life Group understands what it means to receive Christ (John 1:12, 13).

Getting Started:

  1. Have you come to the Cross with humble, repentant faith in Jesus (1 Corinthians 1:17, 18, 22-24)? If yes, then you're CrossFit.
  2. What is God working in your heart? What is He calling you to do to work out your salvation?

Discussing Truths:

  1. 1. What is the difference between working for your salvation and working out your salvation?
  2. 2. Do you find it easier to obey when you're in the Christian community or outside in the secular world?
  3. 3. Explain what Paul meant when he said, "Work out your salvation with fear and trembling"(Psalm 2:11, 12).
  4. 4. Why is it important to apply the WITTY principle in working out your own salvation? (What Is That To You? John 21:22)
  5. 5. How is God the Holy Spirit like a weight-lifter's spotter for our spiritual workout?
  6. 6. Why are so many Christians living as spiritual spectators and not contributors? How can we encourage them to obedience and experience the joy of serving?

Now What? Application:

  1. Pray in faith every day for the Holy Spirit to fill and empower you for God's glory! It will radically transform your life!
  2. What desires has God birthed in your mind that He wants to work in you for His good pleasure? Don't wait to work it out.
