Exalt Jesus as Your Lord

Topics: Jesus

sermon video

I. Jesus is exalted to the greatest position

* God rewards humility with honor and super-exaltation!

  1. Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. For this reason also, God highly exalted Him (Philippians 2:8, 9).
  2. When He [God] raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come (Ephesians 1:20, 21).

II. Jesus is exalted with the greatest name

* God bestowed on Jesus the all-excelling name LORD!

  1. For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name (Philippians 2:9).
  2. Now, Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was (John 17:5).

III. Jesus is exalted for the greatest purpose

* God's purpose is to put all things in submission to Christ Jesus!

  1. So that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father (Philippians 2:10, 11).
  2. Turn to Me and be saved, all the ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is no other. I have sworn by Myself, the word has gone forth from My mouth in righteousness and will not turn back, that to Me every knee will bow, every tongue will swear allegiance(Isaiah 45:22, 23).
  3. I am the Lord, that is My name; I will not give My glory to another, nor My praise to graven images . . . Everyone who is called by My name, and whom I have created for My glory, whom I have formed, even whom I have made? (Isaiah 42:8; 43:7).

Life Group Flow and Discussion Questions

Exalt Jesus as Your Lord

An important Guideline of Life Groups: Exalting Jesus as LORD is central to Life Group get-togethers. Discuss creative ways that you can highly praise Jesus in your personal life as well as in the corporate Body of COTW.

Getting Started:

  1. How is the elusive virtue of humility related to being exalted (Matthew 23:12), and how did Jesus model this in John 13:3-17?
  2. Why do you think Jesus willingly humbled Himself in heaven (2:6), in His incarnation (2:7), and in His gruesome death (2:8)?

Discussing Truths:

  1. How do you understand and explain the Triune relationship between the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit as being One God (Deuteronomy 6:4; Psalm 110:1; Isaiah 48:16; 2 Corinthians 13:14)?/p>
  2. Have you ever stopped to wonder what it must have been like for Jesus to leave the holiness of heaven and come into the woes of our world?/p>
  3. Share in your group the many different names of Jesus given throughout Scripture. Which is your favorite? Try to comment briefly on each one.
  4. What are some ways that you can bring glory to God the Father?
  5. What makes the threefold declaration that Jesus Christ is Lord a rich picture of the gospel (2 Corinthians 4:5)?
  6. How do you express your reverence and awe to your Lord (Hebrews 12:25-29)?

Now What? Application:

  1. Take a fresh look at the steps your Savior took for you (Philippians 2:5-11)! Have you bowed your knee in humble, repentant reverence of Jesus? Have you confessed with your mouth, "Jesus Christ is LORD" (Romans 10:9-10)?
  2. What area of your life do you need to submit to and exalt Jesus as your LORD?
