I. Have an Enduring Faith

1. James, a bond-servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, To the twelve tribes who are dispersed abroad: Greetings (James 1:1).

2. For not even His brothers were believing in Him (John 7:5).

3. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that He appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve.

After that, He appeared to more than five hundred brethren at one time, most of whom remain until now, but some have fallen asleep; then He appeared to James, then to all the apostles; and last of all, as to one untimely born, He appeared to me also (1 Corinthians 15:3-8).

4. Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials (James 1:2, see also 2 Corinthians 7:4, Acts 5:40-41, and Acts 16:25).

5. Knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing (James 1:3-4).

II. Be Wisdom Seekers!

  1. If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways (James 1:5-8).
  2. And Jesus said to him, "If You ca"?? All things are possible to him who believes. Immediately, the boy's father cried out and said, "I do believe; help my unbelief" (Mark 9:23-24).
  3. Let the lowly brother boast in his exaltation, and the rich in his humiliation, because like a flower of the grass he will pass away. For the sun rises with its scorching heat and withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beauty perishes. So also will the rich man fade away in the midst of his pursuits (James 1:9-11).

III. Live in the Goodness of God!

  1. Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love Him (James 1:12).
  2. Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am being tempted by God," for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire, when it has conceived, gives birth to sin, and sin, when it is fully grown, brings forth death. Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. Of his own will, he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures (James 13-18).

Life Group Flow and Discussion Questions

Finding Joy in the Storm

An important Guideline of Life Groups: What we believe impacts how we behave! Discuss the biblical teaching of how the Love of the Father and the Spirit inside us should produce a life that bears fruit.

Getting Started:

  1. What do you think about when you think of perseverance or steadfastness?
  2. James, though a brother to Jesus, calls himself a servant of God. What does it look like to be a servant of God in our modern context?
  3. What is your natural reaction to facing trials or hardships? And how can you train yourself to find the joy where God is working?

Discussing Truths:

1. In light of verse 17, how does knowing that God is constant and unchanging affect your mindset of being his follower?

Now What? Application:

  1. What is one trial you are currently facing? And can you identify where God is working in the midst of it?
  2. What practical wisdom do you need to seek God for this week?
  3. Read James this week. Extra credit for reading it daily?
