Topics: the power of words
I. The power to guide!
1. Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, knowing that as such we will incur a stricter judgment (James 3:1).
2. And said, "Truly I say to you, unless you are converted and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever then humbles himself as this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven." "And whoever receives one such child in My name receives Me; but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it would be better for him to have a heavy millstone hung around his neck, and to be drowned in the depth of the sea" (Matthew 18:3-6).
3. For we all stumble in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body as well (James 3:2, see also Romans 3:23).
4. Now, if we put the bits into the horses' mouths so that they will obey us, we direct their entire body as well. Look at the ships also, though they are so great and are driven by strong winds, are still directed by a very small rudder wherever the inclination of the pilot desires. So also the tongue is a small part of the body, and yet it boasts of great things (James 3:3-5a).
II. The power to destroy!
- See how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire! And the tongue is a fire, the very world of iniquity; the tongue is set among our members as that which defiles the entire body, and sets on fire the course of our life, and is set on fire by hell. For every species of beasts and birds, of reptiles and creatures of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by the human race. But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison (James 3:5a-8).
- Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits (Proverbs 18:21, see also Matthew 12:35-37).
III. The power to bless or curse!
- With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God; from the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be this way. Does a fountain send out from the same opening both fresh and bitter water? Can a fig tree, my brethren, produce olives, or a vine produce figs? Nor can salt water produce fresh (James 3:9-12)
- Then I said, "Woe is me, for I am ruined! Because I am a man of unclean lips, And I live among a people of unclean lips; For my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts" (Isaiah 6:5).
- And put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth. Therefore, laying aside falsehood, speak truth each one of you with his neighbor, for we are members of one another. Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear (Ephesians 4: 24,25 and 29).
- "Do you not understand that everything that goes into the mouth passes into the stomach, and is eliminated?" "But the things that proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and those defile the man." For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, slanders. These are the things which defile the man; but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile the man (Matthew 15:17-20).

Life Group Flow and Discussion Questions
The power of the tongue
An important Guideline of Life Groups: The tongue has tremendous power, and quoting Uncle Ben, with great power comes great responsibility. Talk with your group about how you can use your words to build up and guide one another better.
Getting Started:
- How have you seen words, either your own or someone else's, destroy a relationship, like a spark starting a fire?
- Why do you think James calls the tongue a restless evil and untamable by man?
Discussing Truths:
- Why does James warn that those who teach should be held to a higher standard of judgment?
Now What? Application:
- What are some practical ways to use your words for good or to build others up this week?
- Reflecting on the past week, what are some "evil" uses of the tongue (gossip, complaining, harshness) that you need to repent of or bring under control?
- How can you seek forgiveness from those moments?
- How do you think the Holy Spirit helps us tame our tongue? What is our part vs. God's part?
- Read James this week. Extra credit for reading it daily.
